us-indonesian-flags15 October 2014: The joint US-Indonesia Sustainable Energy for Remote Indonesian Grids (SERIG) project held a workshop to explore renewable energy opportunities for remote grids in the country. The workshop, held on 1 October in Jakarta, Indonesia, prepared the ground for a forthcoming Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the US Department of Energy (DOE) and the Indonesian utility company Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN).

The SERIG project conducts technical and economic analyses in two Indonesian provinces to advance nationally-replicable approaches for replacing diesel power with cheaper renewable energy generation on islands and in remote mini-grids. The project team is working with Indonesian government agencies, US and international private sector partners, and international donors and agencies to accelerate the deployment of renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies in targeted locations in Indonesia.

Representatives of the SERIG project, governments, financing agencies and institutions, and the private sector delivered presentations on: renewable energy and energy efficiency deployment strategies to lower generation costs in isolated grids; smart grid and distributed power deployment; electricity storage technologies; integration of solar technologies into isolated grids; small-scale renewable energy project investment from a privates sector perspective; and financing challenges for renewables in Indonesia.

SERIG was launched in March 2013 and is funded by the US Department of Energy. The US National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) serves as the SERIG project team lead, and the US non-profit organization Winrock International functions as the local lead in Jakarta. The workshop presentations are available for download on the Clean Energy Solutions Center website. [Clean Energy Solutions Center Press Release] [US Department of State Press Release]
