US, China Cooperate on CCS, Energy Efficiency and Clean Energy

The US and China have announced cooperation on two new carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) projects as part of ongoing climate change cooperation being undertaken by the US-China Climate Change Working Group (CCWG).

The two projects and a number of other plans for further cooperation on climate change mitigation were announced during a series of high-level climate change events held between the two Governments in Washington DC, US, on 22-23 June 2015.

The two projects and a number of other plans for further cooperation on climate change mitigation were announced during a series of high-level climate change events held between the two governments in Washington DC, US, from 22-23 June 2015.

The projects, which include an Ordos Basin carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS)-Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) project and a Guangdong Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) Offshore Storage project, were announced on 22 June 2015, during a CCWG event on the role of the private sector in developing and deploying climate change mitigation technologies. The two countries also announced an initiative on Green Ports and Vessels.

Also on 22 June 2015, China’s Special Representative for Climate Change Affairs Xie Zhenhua and US Special Envoy for Climate Change Todd Stern met for an “enhanced policy dialogue” to discuss the global climate agreement expected to be adopted in Paris, France, in December 2015.

On 23 June 2015, US Secretary of State John Kerry, US Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew, Chinese State Councilor Yang Jiechi and Vice Premier Wang Yang chaired the ‘Act on Climate: Strategic and Economic Dialogue (S&ED) Celebration of Energy and Environment Cooperation’ and a private Joint Session on Climate Change. They announced over 50 outcomes of the two countries’ cooperation, including the CCUS projects and many energy efficiency and clean energy initiatives, which are contained in the soon-to-be released CCWG annual report.
