UNWTO Announces Launch of UN Steering Committee on Tourism for Development

6 April 2011: The UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) has announced the launch of the UN Steering Committee on Tourism for Development (UNSCTD), which aims to better position tourism in the development agenda and will seek to deliver coordinated, effective and efficient technical assistance and support to developing countries.

According to the UNWTO, tourism is increasingly a major source of growth, employment, income and revenue for many developing countries, particularly Least Developed Countries (LDCs).

The UNSCTD includes the UNWTO, International Labour Organization (ILO), International Trade Centre (ITC), UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), UN Development Programme (UNDP), UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and World Trade Organization (WTO).
