12 April 2012: The UN Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR)/UN CC:Learn has joined the UN Joint Framework Initiative for Children, Youth and Climate Change, which was established by the UNFCCC Secretariat to promote the engagement of children and youth in the UN system’s intergovernmental processes on climate change and related activities.

The initiative aims to, inter alia, support educational programmes at the regional and national levels in order to build the capacity of children and youth, and facilitate and promote their participation in actions to address climate change. By joining the initiative, UNITAR/UN CC:Learn will help to link its specialized work to the activities of UN CC:Learn, such as the UN CC:Learn “Pilot Projects to Strengthen Human Resources and Skills to Address Climate Change,” and the compilation of a One UN Package of learning resources.

The inter-agency cooperative effort currently includes the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), the UN Development Programme (UNDP), the UN Division of Sustainable Development (UN-DSD), the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the UN Population Fund (UNFPA), the UN Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT), the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the UN Non-Governmental Liaison Service (UN-NGLS), the UN Programme on Youth, the UN Volunteers programme (UNV), the World Bank, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and focal points of the UNFCCC youth constituency.
