10 January 2013: The UN Institute of Training and Research (UNITAR) provided technical support to the Comoros National Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management (SAICM) Planning and Inception Workshop, which launched a SAICM project to: prepare a SAICM Implementation Plan; create a chemical database; strengthen national governance and legal structures; and develop of a national policy on SAICM Implementation.

Funded by SAICM’s Quick Start Programme Trust Fund, and hosted by the Ministry of Production, Environment, Energy, Industry and Crafts of Comoros, the workshop took place in Moroni, Comoros, from 7-9 January 2014. The event brought together over 30 government and non-governmental representatives.

Comoros now plans to formalize the National Project Coordinating Committee and begin drafting action plans and the situation analysis for the national chemicals database. [UNITAR Press Release]
