SAICM UNITARMay 2013: The UN Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) has assisted the Government Haiti in convening a Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management (SAICM) awareness raising workshop. The workshop planned activities to be completed under Haiti’s SAICM project, titled “Strengthening Capacities in the Republic of Haiti for National SAICM Implementation and Supporting GHS Capacity Building.”

The workshop was held from 23-24 April, in Port au Prince, Haiti. It was attended by 20 participants from public and private sectors, civil society, and academia.

According to UNITAR, under it’s SAICM project, Haiti aims to increase national capacity, strengthen national governance mechanisms for intersectoral cooperation and information exchange on chemicals management, develop a SAICM national implementation plan, and undertake enabling activities for the implementation of the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS).

UNITAR says Haiti will now formalize its National Project Coordinating Committee, and develop a SAICM national implementation plan, including specific action plans for identified national priorities. [UNITAR Press Release] [SAICM Website]
