UNITAR Assists Burkina Faso in Launching SAICM Project

The UN Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR), along with the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Burkina Faso Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development, with financial support from the Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management (SAICM) Quick Start Programme (QSP), has launched a project on strengthening Burkina Faso's capacities for implementing SAICM and promoting synergies among the Stockholm, Basel and Rotterdam Conventions.

SAICM UNITAR18 July 2013: The UN Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR), along with the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Burkina Faso Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development, with financial support from the Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management (SAICM) Quick Start Programme (QSP), has launched a project on strengthening Burkina Faso’s capacities for implementing SAICM and promoting synergies among the Stockholm, Basel and Rotterdam Conventions.

An inception workshop took place in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, from 16-18 July 2013, and was attended by representatives from government, industry, academia, civil society organizations.

According to UNITAR, the workshop raised awareness among national stakeholders on SAICM, and provided a forum to plan project activities including an awareness-raising campaign, and training workshops targeting mining industry workers, cotton production workers, and National Focal Points and relevant decision-makers regarding the Basel, Rotterdam, and Stockholm Conventions.
