26 July 2012: The UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UNISDR) and the World Cities Scientific Development Alliance have announced the launch of the Resilient Cities Award. The award aims to recognize excellence in land use planning, design and development activities that protect communities from the impacts of natural hazards and reduce disaster risk.

According to UNISDR, the Award will recognize excellence in the adoption and implementation of the Ten Essentials for Making Cities Resilient, a ten-point checklist designed to help local governments assess their risks and initiate plans to improve their cities’ resilience.
