21 July 2011: The UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UN/ISDR) has repoted that the Government of Viet Nam is working to enact a law on disaster risk prevention and reduction. The law is to define the role of the Government and ensure citizen’s access to information on disaster risks.

According to UN/ISDR, the Ministry of Agriculture is planning to implement a community-based disaster risk management programme covering 6,000 vulnerable communes by 2020. Storms, floods and drought are the most common hazards that affect the country.

The Government of Viet Nam made the commitments at the national launch of the Global Assessment Report on Disaster Risk Reduction, which highlights the political and economic imperative to reduce disaster risks, and the benefits gained from doing so. According to UN/ISDR, Viet Nam authorities have been attempting to locate approximately one million people to less flood-prone areas. Sea-level rise is predicted to displace several more million.
