20 April 2010: The UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UN/ISDR) has released a report titled “Local Governments and Disaster Risk Reduction, Good Practices and Lessons Learned.” The report comprises case studies and contributes to the “Making Cities Resilient” Campaign, which aims to address issues of local governance and urban risk, as well as sustainable urbanization principles.
The report contains 14 case studies from various geographic regions and themes, including climate-related disaster risk reduction (DRR) management. Cases were contributed by local governments and partners such as national governments and non-governmental organizations. The report also contains a summary of the International Conference on “Building a Local Government Alliance for Disaster Risk Reduction,” which was held and hosted by the Metropolitan City of Incheon, Republic of Korea, in August 2009, from which the main purpose and content of the 2010-2011 Campaign has emerged.
