14 December 2011: The UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UN/ISDR) has announced that, together with the ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability, it has piloted the Local Government Self-Assessment Tool (LG-SAT), designed to assist disaster reduction efforts by cities and local governments that have signed up to the global “Making Cities Resilient” Campaign.

LG-SAT is funded by the World Bank’s Global Facility for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) and the European Commission’s Humanitarian Aid branch (ECHO). To test the tool, 23 cities from 16 countries provided data on 43 key indicators to measure the progress of local governments in implementing ten essential actions outlined by the Cities Campaign. Self assessments were undertaken at the city level with the involvement of the community stakeholders. According to UN/ISDR, after feedback from local and national country representatives, the LG-SAT will be made available for global use in early 2012.

The aim of the Campaign is to enlist over 1,000 local government leaders to invest more in DRR, including: improving urban planning, infrastructure and building safety; reinforcing drainage systems to reduce flood, storm and health threats; installing early warning systems; conducting public preparedness drills; and taking measures to adapt to the increasing impacts of climate change.
