The UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UN/ISDR) has announced that it has initiated consultations a Post-2015 Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR).
To mark the initiation of consultations, UN/ISDR has released a 10-page paper, titled “Towards a Post-2015 Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction,” which features sections on: background information; outline of trends; progress and challenges; and potential forms of a Post-2015 Framework.
5 March 2012: The UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UN/ISDR) has announced that it has initiated consultations on a disaster risk reduction (DRR) blueprint to succeed the Hyogo Framework for Action (HFA) 2005-2015: Building the Resilience of Nations and Communities, in advance of the 2015 World Conference on Disaster Reduction, which the Japanese Government is proposing to host.
Initiating the consultations, HE Yoichi Otabe, Japanese Ambassador to the International Organizations in Geneva, Switzerland, underscored that the Great East Japan Earthquake confirmed DRR as a critical global issue, and expressed the hope that commitment to reducing risk and increasing resilience would be “enhanced as a result of Rio+20,” in reference to the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD).
According to UN/ISDR, currently 133 countries report on their HFA implementation process, and there are 78 National Platforms for DRR. In addition, UN/ISDR is collaborating with 40 countries to build national disaster loss databases. To mark the launch of the consultations, UN/ISDR has released a ten-page paper, titled “Towards a Post-2015 Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction,” which includes a timeframe and timeline of main events for a Post-2015 Framework for DRR. The paper features sections on: background information; outline of trends; progress and challenges; and potential forms of a Post-2015 Framework.
