UN/ISDR Convenes African Ministers’ Conference on DRR

23 April 2010: African Ministers attended the UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UN/ISDR) Second Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR), from 14-16 April 2010, in Nairobi, Kenya. Key outcomes of the meeting included the adoption of the Programme of Action for the Implementation of the Africa Regional Strategy for Disaster Risk Reduction (2006–2015) and a Ministerial Declaration.
The goal and objectives of the Programme of Action include to mainstream risk reduction management and climate change adaptation as an integral part of sustainable development and related programmes. Priority programme components include improved governance of DRR institutions and the integration of DRR and climate change adaptation into sustainable development planning and programmes.
In the Ministerial Declaration, Ministers recommend to the African Union (AU) Summit to request the AU Commission to: continue mobilizing political support; and advocate for international community, institutions and development partners to support member States to institutionalize multi-sectoral National Platforms for DRR, or similar coordinating mechanisms, that integrate disaster and climate risk management. They also call on the AU Summit to make DRR and climate change adaptation a national education priority, through their integration into the educational system, including the development of curricula and training of teachers.
