7 December 2010: The UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction Secretariat (UN/ISDR) has entered into an agreement with the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS) to strengthen collaboration on disaster risk reduction (DRR) and climate change adaptation.

The two entities are expected to increase their cooperation on technical assistance for DRR, including by developing and signing a data sharing protocol, and carrying out an assessment of key DRR and climate change adaptation institutions within ECCAS. According to UN/ISDR, activities to be initiated immediately include: the provision of support to Gabon to develop its contingency plan for disaster response; and evaluation of agricultural damage and water pollution in Goma city after the Nyamulagira volcano eruption in early 2010, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. UN/ISDR’s collaboration with ECCAS is underpinned by support from the World Bank’s Global Facility for Disaster Reduction and Recovery. [UN/ISDR Press Release]
