The UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) has spotlighted its efforts working with the Government of Mongolia on the phase-out and destruction of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs).
The efforts take place a US$2.65 million project funded under the Global Environment Facility (GEF), titled 'Capacity Building For Environmentally Sound PCBs Management And Disposal.'
24 July 2013: The UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) has spotlighted its efforts working with the Government of Mongolia on the phase-out and destruction of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). The efforts have been undertaken as part of a US$2.65 million project funded under the Global Environment Facility (GEF), titled ‘Capacity Building For Environmentally Sound PCBs Management And Disposal.’
The project has involved: development of a regulatory framework; equipping laboratories; training staff; developing standards for analyzing PCBs; and creating a national inventory of all the PCB-containing equipment. According to UNIDO, the project has resulted in the establishment of a plant to decontaminate transformer oils and safely dispose of PCBs.
The project plans to treat over 1,000 tonnes of PCBs, and the Government of Mongolia is expected to use the plant to treat another 1,300 tonnes post-project. [UNIDO Press Release] [GEF Project Details]
