story highlights

The UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) has launched an industrial refrigeration project titled ‘Reducing greenhouse gas and ozone-depleting substance emissions through technology transfer in industrial refrigeration' in Hanoi, Viet Nam, to help the country address climate change and ozone layer depletion challenges.

UNIDO21 October 2014: The UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) has launched an industrial refrigeration project, titled ‘Reducing greenhouse gas and ozone-depleting substance emissions through technology transfer in industrial refrigeration.’ The project was launched in Hanoi, Viet Nam, to help the country address climate change and ozone layer depletion challenges.

Funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and officially approved by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MONRE) of Viet Nam, the project aims to help Viet Nam move its industrial refrigeration industry away from refrigerant gases, such as hydrochlorofluorocarbon, an ozone-depleting gas that also contributes to climate change, towards low global warming potential (GWP) refrigerants. Funds will also be provided by the Vietnamese Environmental Protection Fund (VEPF) in the form of soft loans for companies undertaking technological conversion.

The project will be based on a combination of technical assistance, policy and regulatory support, technology transfer, and capacity-building and awareness-raising activities. Sustainable and affordable cold storage facilities will be promoted in selected pilot plants. [UNIDO Press Release]
