GEF UNIDOSeptember 2013: The UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), together with Senegal’s Ministry of Environment, has launched a US$2 million project funded by the Global Environment Facility’s (GEF) project on Environmentally Sound Management of Municipal Waste and Hazardous Waste to Reduce unintentionally produced persistent organic pollutants (uPOPs).

The four-year project, launched at a workshop in Dakar, Senegal, from 13-14 August 2013, is focused on reducing uPOPs emissions in Senegal through the use Best Available Techniques (BAT) and Best Environmental Practices (BEP), in accordance with the provisions of the Stockholm Convention.

The project is being executed by UNIDO in cooperation with the Government of Senegal. It will focus on demonstrating BAT and BEP by establishing controlled landfills and promoting recycling in two municipalities. The project will also promote sustainable waste management practices by introducing recycling practices for used lead-acid batteries. [IISD RS Sources][GEF Project webpage]
