unido-dcse27 January 2015: The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy (DSCE) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to promote industrial energy efficiency and renewable energy policies, technologies and solutions in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the Arab region. The collaboration is expected to support the achievement of national and global commitments under the post-2015 development agenda by building regional capacity and addressing existing barriers to creating sustainable energy markets.

Under the MoU, signed on 27 January in Vienna, Austria, the two sides will promote South-South knowledge and technology transfer, with an eye on inclusive and sustainable industrial development. The collaboration supports the UAE’s federal- and local-level energy demand reduction and source diversification commitments, and the UN Secretary-General’s synthesis report on the post-2015 development agenda, in particular its Goals 7 and 9 on sustainable energy, and inclusive and sustainable industrialization.

Emphasizing the potential of the “energy-industry nexus” in generating policies, technologies and solutions for climate change, UNIDO Director General Li Yong said the collaboration would allow the two entities to work jointly to “find innovative means to promote a culture of sustainable energy, create shared prosperity and safeguard the environment” and support the UAE and other Arab countries “on their path to inclusive and sustainable industrial development.”

On the UAE’s side, according to Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Vice Chairman of DSCE, the cooperation with UNIDO will add to Dubai’s efforts to diversify its energy sources, rationalize energy consumption, and conserve natural resources and the environment in line with the Dubai Integrated Energy Strategy 2030.

UNIDO, a specialized UN agency, promotes industrial development for poverty reduction, inclusive globalization and environmental sustainability. DSCE is the governing body responsible for energy policy development, planning and coordination in the Emirate of Dubai, which is part of the UAE. DCSE oversees the organization of the World Green Economy Summit (WGES) that will held in Dubai for the second time from 22-24 April 2015. [UNIDO Press Release] [DSCE Website] [WGES 2015 Webpage]
