16 April 2013: The UN Global Compact has reported on the private sector’s latest contributions to the post-2015 development agenda processes. The April 2013 issue of the Global Compact Bulletin highlights a Private Sector Leaders Roundtable held on the sidelines of the fourth meeting of the UN High-level Panel on the Post-2015 Development Agenda (HLP), and a joint report from the Compact and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD).

The round table event took place in Bali, Indonesia, in March 2013, organized by the Indonesia National Committee of the Post-2015 Development Agenda and the Global Compact Local Network Indonesia, with support from the UN Global Compact (UNGC). The roundtable served as a platform for the Global Compact to share results of previous post-2015 consultations and consult with business leaders from the Asia-Pacific region. Participants discussed issues they believe should be incorporated into a future set of development goals, such as good governance and the rule of law, education, social integration and inclusion, sustainable consumption and production (SCP), and poverty eradication, and identified mechanisms the private sector is willing to leverage to help address these issues. Participants agreed that corporate sustainability should be a core business contribution to the post-2015 development agenda. Results from the consultation were shared with HLP representatives, the Bulletin reports, who concurred that only through responsible practices can business make a positive contribution.

The joint report by the Compact and WBCSD was prepared with support from the World Economic Forum and the HLP’s business representatives, and submitted to the HLP. It outlines the business perspective on the post-2015 development agenda, and articulates the importance of engaging the business community in defining the post-2015 development agenda, including its objectives and goals. The report also discusses recommendations on how business, and the public sector working in partnership with business, can best contribute to future implementation efforts.
