UNGA’s Second Committee Launches Work

The UN General Assembly's Second Committee (Economic and Financial) held its organizational session for UNGA 69, on 19 September 2014, in New York, US.

The Second Committee will conduct its substantive work from 7 October until 26 November, beginning with the general debate on 7-9 October.

UNGA19 September 2014: The UN General Assembly’s Second Committee (Economic and Financial) held its organizational session for UNGA 69, on 19 September 2014, in New York, US. The Second Committee will conduct its substantive work from 7 October until 26 November, beginning with the general debate on 7-9 October.

The Committee approved the draft programme of work (A/C.2/69/L.1), including the dates for agenda items on: External debt sustainability and development; Eradication of poverty; follow-up to and implementation of the outcome of the 2002 International Conference on Financing for Development and the 2008 Review Conference; Groups of countries in special situations; and Agriculture development, food security and nutrition.

A joint meeting with ECOSOC, on 28 October, will discuss ‘A renewed global partnership for development.’

Item 19, Sustainable Development, covers: a) Implementation of Agenda 21, the Programme for the Further Implementation of Agenda 21 and the outcomes of the World Summit on Sustainable Development and of the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development; b) Follow-up to and implementation of the Mauritius Strategy for the Further Implementation of the Programme of Action for the Sustainable Development of Small Island Developing States; c) International Strategy for Disaster Reduction; d) Protection of global climate for present and future generations of humankind; e) Implementation of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification in Those Countries Experiencing Serious Drought and/or Desertification, Particularly in Africa; f) Convention on Biological Diversity; g) Report of the United Nations Environment Assembly of the United Nations Environment Programme; h) Harmony with Nature; i) Promotion of new and renewable sources of energy.

The Chair of the Committee, Sebastiano Cardi, Permanent Representative of Italy, said the Committee will meet on 9 October for a discussion of working methods, based on the non-paper by the Bureau for the 68th session. [Second Committee Documents for 69th Session] [Calendar of Work]
