UNGA Sets Dates for 2014 SIDS Conference

The UN General Assembly (UNGA) has adopted a decision on the Third International Conference on Small Island Developing States (SIDS), with details on the Conference's dates, location, and related activities.

UNGA17 May 2013: The UN General Assembly (UNGA) has adopted a decision on the Third International Conference on Small Island Developing States (SIDS), with details on the Conference’s dates, location, and related activities.

By the text adopted on 17 May 2013 (A/67/L.66), the Assembly decides that the Conference will take place from 1-4 September 2014, in Apia, Samoa. It is to be preceded by Conference-related activities from 28-30 August 2014, also in Apia.

The Assembly agreed in December 2012 that the Government of Samoa would serve as host of the Conference.

Decisions on the SIDS Conference are part of the UNGA’s agenda item on “Sustainable development: follow-up to and implementation of the Mauritius Strategy for the Further Implementation of the Programme of Action for the Sustainable Development of Small Island Developing States.”

Leading up to the Conference in September 2014, the SIDS sub-regions will host preparatory gatherings during July 2013, and the UNGA President is expected to launch the formal preparatory process in December 2013.
