28 November 2012: The UN General Assembly’s (UNGA) Second Committee (Economic and Financial) has approved draft resolution A/C.2/67/L.41 on “Towards the sustainable development of the Caribbean Sea for present and future generations.” The resolution falls under the agenda item on follow-up to and implementation to the Mauritius Strategy for the Further Implementation (MSI) of the Programme of Action for the Sustainable Development of Small Island Developing States (SIDS).

Recognizing the Caribbean Sea as a fragile ecosystem in need of international and regional initiatives to promote its conservation, the document welcomes the plan of action adopted by the Caribbean Sea Commission and calls for UN assistance in its implementation. It also welcomes the Special Area designation of the region under annex V to the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships, and calls for international assistance to protect the Caribbean Sea from pollution from ships. The draft also mentions sustainable fisheries codes under the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) and marine biodiversity efforts under the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) to conserve the sea.

The draft resolution calls on the UN and international community to provide greater assistance to states in the Caribbean Sea region for emergency preparedness, disaster response capabilities, pollution prevention and food security. It also invites Member States to assist Caribbean countries in becoming parties to conventions and protocols relevant to the sustainability of the region.
