UNGA14 January 2014: The Office of the President of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) has released a concept note on ‘Contributions of North-South, South-South, Triangular Cooperation, and Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) for Development to the Implementation of the Post-2015 Development Agenda,’ ahead of a high-level event on this topic.

The high-level event will be part of a series of three high-level events and three thematic debates hosted by President John Ashe to encourage consensus building and concrete action on implementation of the post-2015 development agenda.

The high level event, which will convene from 20-21 May 2014, in New York, US, will focus on mobilizing political commitment on the means of implementation for the post-2015 agenda, and will promote the urgent implementation of commitments under the global partnership for development (Millennium Development Goal (MDG) 8). The event will also: promote the scaling up of all forms of cooperation; be guided by a view of South-South and triangular cooperation as a complement to traditional cooperation; and identify how ICTs can bridge technology divides among countries.

The event aims to discuss five questions on cooperation and the post-2015 agenda, including: identifying mechanisms to strengthen traditional cooperation, particularly North-South cooperation; creating incentives to reinforce triangular cooperation; highlighting positive examples of cooperation in implementation the MDGs that could be replicated; integrating ICTs as technological enablers for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs); and identifying ways the UN system can increase the relevance and effectiveness of all forms of cooperation.

The concept note highlights the need for effective, improved and strengthened means of development cooperation in the post-2015 agenda. It includes a background section, debate objectives and information on the format, expected outcome and participants in the debate. The President will issue a summary at the conclusion of the debate that will be shared with the UNGA’s Open Working Group (OWG) on SDGs and the Intergovernmental Committee of Experts on Sustainable Development Financing (ICSDF).

President Ashe chose ‘The Post-215 Development Agenda: Setting the Stage!’ as the theme for the 68th Session of the UNGA.
