11 January 2013: Vuk Jeremic, President of the 67th Session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA), has initiated preparations for the 2013 special event to follow up on efforts made towards achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

In a letter to Permanent Representatives of UN Member States, Jeremic announces that he as appointed two co-facilitators for the preparation of the event: Anne Anderson, Permanent Representative of Ireland, and Kingsley Mamabolo, Permanent Representative Designate of South Africa.

This event is called for in the outcome document of the 2010 High-Level Plenary Meeting of the General Assembly, which requested the President of UNGA 68 to organize the event. Jeremic notes, however, a need for an early start for consultations on the timing and level of participation, scope, format and modalities for the event, “in order to ensure adequate arrangements.” [Letter from UNGA President]
