story highlights

According to Vuk Jeremić, President of the UN General Assembly (UNGA), the review “is meant to gear up the whole ECOSOC system to address the challenges of sustainable development, also in the light of the Rio+20 Outcome Document and the post-2015 UN development agenda.”

29 November 2012: The President of the UN General Assembly (UNGA), Vuk Jeremić, has appointed Jan Grauls, Permanent Representative of Belgium to the UN, and George Talbot, Permanent Representative of Guyana to the UN, as co-facilitators of the upcoming review to strengthen the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).

The review was mandated by the UNGA in Resolution 65/285, and its importance stressed in the outcome document of the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20).

According to Jeremić, the review “is meant to gear up the whole ECOSOC system to address the challenges of sustainable development, also in the light of the Rio+20 Outcome Document and the post-2015 UN development agenda.”

The co-facilitators will consult with Member States regarding the timing for initiating the review process. Jeremić writes that “extensive consultations” likely will be needed to undertake the review. [Letter from UNGA President]
