April 2011: The UN General Assembly (UNGA) has adopted a resolution (A/65/L.69) at its 65th session under agenda item 62 (a) on the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD), regarding progress in implementation and international support.

The draft resolution was submitted by the delegation of Argentina, on behalf of the States members of the UN that are members of the Group of 77 and China, and focuses on the need to implement all commitments by the international community regarding the economic and social development of Africa. The resolution notes with concern the impact of the global financial and economic crisis, climate change, food crisis and energy prices on the fight against poverty and hunger, which has the potential to reverse progress towards the achievement of the internationally agreed development goals, including the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

The resolution encourages African countries to accelerate the achievement of food security in Africa by raising the share of agriculture and rural development in their budget expenditures and through the adoption of the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP) and the outcome of the post-Abuja meeting of the International Technical Committee of the Food Security Summit, held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, in May 2007.

The resolution recognizes that, although African countries contribute the least to climate change, Africa is one of the regions most vulnerable and exposed to adverse impacts. It calls upon the international community to support Africa in adaptation and sustainable development efforts through the transfer of technology, capacity-building and the provision of resources.

The resolution requests the UN Secretary-General to submit a report on its implementation to the 66th session of the UNGA on the basis of inputs from Governments, organizations of the United Nations system and other stakeholders. [Publication: UNGA Resolution A/65/L.69]
