22 December 2015: The UN General Assembly (UNGA) adopted the remaining resolutions through which its Second Committee (Economic and Financial) concluded the main part of its work for UNGA’s 70th Session. The adopted resolutions include: ‘International financial system and development;’ ‘Financial inclusion for sustainable development;’ ‘External debt and sustainability and development;’ ‘Sustainable Development;’ and ‘Draft programme of work of the Second Committee for the seventy-first session of the General Assembly.’
The UNGA meeting took place on 22 December 2015, in New York, US.
The adopted resolution on ‘Implementation of Agenda 21, the Programme for the Further Implementation of Agenda 21 and the outcomes of the World Summit on Sustainable Development and of the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development:‘ takes note of the report of the Secretary-General on the mainstreaming of the three dimensions of sustainable development throughout the UN system; reiterates the call of the UN Conference on Sustainable Development and in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development for the further mainstreaming of the three dimensions throughout the UN system, and in this regard invites the Secretary-General to continue to report to the UN General Assembly (UNGA), through the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), on progress made, including for the consideration of the high-level political forum (HLPF); requests the Secretary-General to submit to the UNGA at its 71st session a report on the implementation of the present resolution; and decides to include, under the item entitled “Sustainable development”, the sub-item entitled ‘Implementation of Agenda 21, the Programme for the Further Implementation of Agenda 21 and the outcomes of the World Summit on Sustainable Development and of the UN Conference on Sustainable Development” in the provisional agenda of its 71st session, “unless otherwise agreed in the discussions on the revitalization of the Second Committee.”
The adopted resolution on ‘Follow-up to the International Conference on Financing for Development’ reaffirms that ECOSOC forum on financing for development (FfD) follow-up: will hold its sessions at UN Headquarters in New York in the spring and its inaugural session in 2016; will be chaired by the ECOSOC President; the ECOSOC President, in collaboration with the UN Secretary-General, will produce an information note regarding arrangements for the 2016 forum; and ECOSOC will appoint two co-facilitators who will prepare the draft conclusions and recommendations of the forum and will facilitate consultations among Member States with a view to reaching its intergovernmentally agreed conclusions and recommendations.
The Assembly adopted also a Draft decision on the Revitalization of the work of the Second Committee through which it decides that the Committee will convene a meeting early in 2016 to continue discussing the revitalization of its work.
