26 June 2009: The UN Population Fund (UNFPA), and the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED), in collaboration with the Population Division of the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA) and the UN Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT), held a workshop from 24-25 June 2009, in London, UK, on population dynamics and climate change.

The expert group meeting focused on how age structure, household size and spatial distribution affect per capita emissions, and how it should be integrated into climate change modeling, particularly in the context of adaptation and mitigation. Participants also held sessions on climate-induced migration, urbanization and climate change, data needs, population issues in climate change strategies, and how to integrate population issues in UN Delivery As One at the country level.
UNFPA’s agenda on climate change includes the provision of evidence-based arguments to shed light onto population dynamics and climate change, an issue that has not been sufficiently addressed at the climate change negotiations. This meeting was held as part of UNFPA’s celebration of the 15th anniversary of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD+15). The 2009 edition of UNFPA’s flagship publication, State of the World Population, expected be released on 18 November, will focus on gender, population and climate change.
