UNFCCC Workshop Focuses on Equitable Access to Sustainable Development

The in-session workshop on equitable access to sustainable development was opened by Aysar Ahmed Al Tayeb (Saudi Arabia), Chair of the Ad Hoc Working Group on Long-term Cooperative Action under the Convention (AWG-LCA) and Chair of the workshop; and Christiana Figueres, UNFCCC Executive Secretary.

16 May 2012: The in-session workshop on equitable access to sustainable development took place in Bonn, Germany, during the UN Climate Change Conference. The workshop aimed to enhance Parties’ understanding of ensuring equitable access to sustainable development and its possible operationalization, particularly in the context of identifying the timeframe for the peaking of global emissions and the global goal for emission reductions in 2050.

Held on 16 May 2012, the workshop was opened by Aysar Ahmed Al Tayeb (Saudi Arabia), Chair of the Ad Hoc Working Group on Long-term Cooperative Action under the Convention (AWG-LCA) and Chair of the workshop; and Christiana Figueres, UNFCCC Executive Secretary.

Sivan Kartha, Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI), and Prodipto Ghosh, The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), delivered introductory presentations on equity issues in the context of climate change. Participants heard presentations from: the Alliance of Small Island Developing States (AOSIS); Bolivia; India, Switzerland; South Centre; Bangladesh, for the least developed countries (LDCs); China; Singapore; CAN International; the EU; the US; Brazil; Australia; and Egypt.
