UNFCCC Summarizes Cooperative Activities

The document summarizes key activities in the areas of: technology; finance; capacity building; adaptation; mitigation; climate knowledge, comprised of science, research and systematic observation; gender; cooperation with the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) Secretariats through the Joint Liaison Group of the Rio Conventions; the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the post-2015 development agenda; contribution of the private sector through the UN Global Compact; and communications.

UNFCCC30 April 2015: The UNFCCC Secretariat has published a document that summarizes key cooperative activities it has carried out with other international organizations since April 2014. The document summarizes key activities in the areas of: technology; finance; capacity building; adaptation; mitigation; climate knowledge, comprised of science, research and systematic observation; gender; cooperation with the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) Secretariats through the Joint Liaison Group of the Rio Conventions; the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the post-2015 development agenda; contribution of the private sector through the UN Global Compact; and communications.

The document (FCCC/SBSTA/2015/INF.3) was prepared on the request of the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA), and will be taken up at its 42nd session (SBSTA 42), scheduled to take place in Bonn, Germany, from 1-11 June 2015.

The document presents: activities initiated by the UN System Chief Executives Board for Coordination (CEB), the highest-level coordination forum of the UN system; and key cooperative activities, initiatives and programmes of the UNFCCC Secretariat in specific areas.

On activities initiated by CEB, the report mentions the Working Group on Climate Change of the High-Level Committee on Programmes (HLCP). The document also highlights the Secretariat’s close coordination and collaboration with the UN Secretary-General’s Climate Change Support Team.

SBSTA 42 will be invited to take note of the summary, and may invite parties to the UNFCCC to provide guidance on the scope and direction of the cooperative activities presented in the report. SBSTA 42 may also make recommendations on key priority areas for enhancing efforts and possible related approaches.
