UNFCCC Secretariat Publishes Carbon Footprint Fact Sheet28 October 2009: The UNFCCC Secretariat has published a fact sheet on minimizing the Copenhagen footprint. It outlines the steps that the Danish Government is taking to minimize emissions by implementing a range of energy saving measures at the conference site to reach a 20% reduction in CO2 leading up to COP 15.

The Danish Government intends to offset the conference emissions by replacing outdated, polluting brick kilns in Dhaka, Bangladesh, with 20 energy efficient ones. This could cut more than 50,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions each year and improve air quality in one of the world’s most polluted cities. In Copenhagen, hotel owners have been encouraged to expand the number of environmentally friendly certified hotel rooms and delegates are, inter alia, encouraged to use the public transport system to reach the Conference Center. No gifts or conference bags will be given to delegates. Instead, money saved has been invested in 11 scholarships for students from around the world to attend a fully-financed two year MA course in Denmark.
With a view to offsetting emissions generated from the Barcelona Climate Change Talks, the Ministry of the Environment and Housing of the Government of Catalonia, Spain, will purchase and sell emission allowances and will post further details at: http://www.bcnclimatechange.org/. [Fact sheet]
