UNFCCC4 September 2014: The UNFCCC Secretariat has published a report on the high-level ministerial round table on increased ambition of Kyoto Protocol commitments by developed country Parties, which was mandated by the 8th session of the Conference of the Parties serving as the meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol (CMP).

The high-level ministerial round table took place on 5 June 2014, in Bonn, Germany, in conjunction with the 40th sessions of the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA) and Subsidiary Body for Implementation (SBI) in June 2014. The report consists of an introduction and sections on the proceedings of the high-level ministerial round table, and key issues highlighted during the discussion.

During the high-level ministerial round table, the discussion focused on parties’ intention to increase the ambition of their quantified emission limitation and reduction commitments in the second commitment period, the potential for increasing ambition, progress made towards meeting their mitigation commitments and latest projections for greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions until the end of the second commitment period.

Parties also discussed: urgency of action and the need for higher ambition; ratification of the Doha Amendment to the Kyoto Protocol; lessons learned from the implementation of the Kyoto Protocol that can guide future international action on climate change; and national actions and efforts being undertaken to achieve the ultimate objective of the Convention.
