UNFCCC18 September 2014: The Secretariat of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) has released the report of an in-session expert meeting on non-market-based approaches, such as joint mitigation and adaptation approaches for the integral and sustainable management of forests, to support the implementation of the activities referred to in COP Decision 1/CP.16, paragraph 70 (REDD+ activities).

The meeting, which was mandated by the 38th session of the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA 38), took place on 6 June 2014, in Bonn, Germany, during SBSTA 40.

The report (FCCC/SBSTA/2014/INF.13) presents the proceedings of the meeting and summaries of its two sessions. During the first session, the meeting Co-Chairs made presentations on related submissions and the status of the negotiations under the agenda item. These were followed by presentations by Bolivia, Indonesia on behalf of ten countries form the East Asian region, and the US.

The second session, held as a plenary discussion, collected views on proposals on methodological guidance for non-market-based approaches supporting REDD+ implementation. The discussion was guided by three questions relating to: the meaning and relevance of non-marked-based approaches to REDD+; lessons from current non-market-based financing of REDD+ activities; and additional methodological guidance.

The report notes that the agenda, information note, and presentations that parties and the Co-Chairs made during the meeting are available on the UNFCCC website.

SBSTA 41, meeting from 1-6 December 2014, in Lima, Peru, will be invited to take the outcome of the discussions into account when considering the need for further methodological guidance on the matter.
