UNFCCC Reports on GHG Inventory Reviews

The UNFCCC Secretariat has published the following two documents in preparation the 41st session of the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA): an annual report on the technical review of greenhouse gas (GHG) inventories from Annex I Parties to the Convention (FCCC/SBSTA/2014/
INF.17); and an annual report on the technical review of GHG inventories and other information reported by UNFCCC Annex I Parties that are also Parties to the Kyoto Protocol (FCCC/SBSTA/2014/
INF.18).

UNFCCC4 November 2014: In preparation for the 41st session of the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA), the UNFCCC Secretariat has published: an annual report on the technical review of greenhouse gas (GHG) inventories from Annex I Parties to the Convention (FCCC/SBSTA/2014/
INF.17); and an annual report on the technical review of GHG inventories and other information reported by UNFCCC Annex I Parties that are also Parties to the Kyoto Protocol (FCCC/SBSTA/2014/
INF.18).

The first report describes activities relating to GHG inventory reviews undertaken from October 2013 to September 2014, and provides information on: training activities under the Convention and the Kyoto Protocol; a meeting of inventory lead reviewers; progress made in updating the roster of experts; and progress made in maintaining and developing the GHG information system. More specifically, it describes training programmes for: GHG inventory review experts; and members of expert review teams participating in annual reviews under the Kyoto Protocol.

The second document provides information on the status of submission and review of annual information required under the Kyoto Protocol, including GHG inventories, and the status of submission of review reports to the COP serving as the meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol (CMP) and the Compliance Committee. The note also includes information on, inter alia: the selection of experts and lead reviewers and their participation in the review process; and on the annual report to the SBSTA prepared by the lead reviewers. It also includes a compilation of information submitted by parties on minimizing adverse impacts.

The annual report of inventory lead reviewers, for both documents, includes subsections on, inter alia: statistics and follow-up to the tenth lead reviewers meeting; training and availability of review experts; review tools; virtual team room; development of the new common reporting format software; review consistency; planning for and recommendations for improving the 2014 review cycle; and financial implications.
