UNFCCC13 November 2014: The UNFCCC Secretariat has released a compilation of countries’ adaptation planning experiences, including information on good practices and lessons learned in the areas of ecosystems, human settlements, water resources and health. Parties and partner organizations of the Nairobi Work Programme (NWP) on impacts, vulnerability and adaptation to climate change were also invited to submit information on monitoring and evaluation, and processes and structures for linking national and local adaptation planning.

In party submissions, various tools and methods are described, such as the EU’s six-step Adaptation Strategy guidelines, Mexico’s integration of climate change adaptation into its National Development Plan, resulting in the Climate Change Special Programme, and the US’s Interagency Climate Change Adaptation Task Force. Submissions from intergovernmental organizations highlight methodologies and programmes being implemented in developing countries and offer various online resources, such as toolkits, videos and other knowledge products, for replicating their successes.

The Subsidiary Body on Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA), at its 39th session, invited parties and partner organizations of the NWP to make these submissions in response to a recommendation from the Adaptation Committee. The 21 submissions received, consisting of three from Parties, ten from intergovernmental organizations and eight from non-governmental organizations (NGOs), will inform the work of the SBSTA at its 41st session in Lima, Peru, from 1-6 December 2014.
