UNFCCC Releases GEF Report to COP 21

The UNFCCC Secretariat has released the annual report of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) to the Conference of the Parties (COP).

The document (FCCC/CP/2015/4) contains information on the GEF's response to COP guidance, and relevant GEF initiatives and achievements.

GEF11 September 2015: The UNFCCC Secretariat has released the annual report of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) to the Conference of the Parties (COP). The document (FCCC/CP/2015/4) contains information on the GEF’s response to COP guidance, and relevant GEF initiatives and achievements.

An accompanying note states that: the report of the GEF to the 21st Session of the COP to the UNFCCC was submitted by the GEF Secretariat to the UNFCCC Secretariat on 18 August; and the COP will, after each session, communicate to the GEF Council any policy guidance concerning the Financial Mechanism approved by the COP.

The report, contained in the annex, covers: the GEF’s response to COP guidance, including relevant COP 20 decisions and conclusions of the 41st and 42nd sessions of the Subsidiary Body for Implementation (SBI); GEF initiatives; and GEF achievements, including in the areas of support to intended nationally determined contributions (INDCs), mitigation, adaptation, technology transfer, and enabling activities and capacity building.

On INDCs, the report notes that the GEF has undertaken “concerted efforts to assist countries to prepare their [INDCs] for the anticipated 2015 climate agreement, in response to the guidance in Decisions 1/CP.19 [further advancing the Durban Plaform] and 1/CP.20 [the Lima call for climate action],” and “has been making resources available for countries to prepare their INDCs.” During the reporting period, from 1 July 2014 to 30 June 2015, the GEF reports it provided support to 38 additional countries for the preparation of their INDCs, bringing the total number of countries supported to 45.

COP 21, taking place from 30 November to 11 December, in Paris, France, will consider the report of the GEF to the COP under matters relating to finance. [Publication: Report of the Global Environmental Facility to the Conference of the Parties]
