UNFCCC Releases GEF Report to COP 20

The Global Environment Facility (GEF) Secretariat has submitted to the Secretariat of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) its report to the 20th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 20) to the UNFCCC, for COP 20 to communicate to the GEF Council any policy guidance approved by the COP concerning the financial mechanism.

GEF UNFCCC2 September 2014: The UNFCCC Secretariat has released the report of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) to the 20th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 20) to the UNFCCC. The report will form the basis for the COP to communicate to the GEF Council any policy guidance approved by UNFCCC parties concerning the financial mechanism.

Submitted in accordance with a memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the COP and the GEF Council, the annual report, dated 18 August 2014, consists of three main parts, 11 annexes and numerous tables.

The first part focuses on the GEF’s response to COP guidance, including COP 19 decisions, and SBI 39 and SBI 40 conclusions. The second part deals with the role of GEF support in achieving climate benefits in relation to: climate change mitigation, including sections on GEF support for key mitigation sectors, and Small Grants Program for Climate Change Mitigation (SGP); adaptation, including sections on the Least Developed Countries Fund (LDCF) and Special Climate Change Fund (SCCF); technology transfer, including sections on the GEF’s support for Climate Technology Center and Network (CTCN), and public-private partnerships for technology transfer; enabling activities and capacity building; results-based management; and climate change impact evaluation.

The third part addresses the GEF’s initiatives, namely: the sixth replenishment period of the GEF (GEF-6); the fifth overall performance study; the GEF 2020 strategy; synergies across GEF focal areas and trust funds; and private sector engagement. [Publication: GEF Report to COP 20]
