UNFCCC Publishes SBSTA 36 Report

At its 36th session, the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA) prepared conclusions for: general guidelines for measurement, reporting and verification (MRV) of domestically supported nationally appropriate mitigation actions (NAMAs) by developing countries and land use, land-use change and forestry (LULUCF) under the Kyoto Protocol Article 3, paragraphs 3 and 4, and under the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM).

6 July 2012: The UNFCCC Secretariat has published the meeting report of the 36th session of the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA 36), held in Bonn, Germany, from 14-25 May 2012.

The report describes the proceedings of the 36th session of SBSTA, featuring sections on, inter alia: opening of the session, organizational matters, and discussions and conclusions proposed under the numerous agenda items and sub-items addressed, such as: the Nairobi work programme on impacts, vulnerability and adaptation to climate change; methodological guidance for activities relating to reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation and the role of conservation, sustainable management of forests and enhancement of forest carbon stocks in developing countries (REDD+); response measures; and methodological guidance under the Convention and the Kyoto Protocol.

The Annexes to the report include: a possible draft decision on modalities for national forest monitoring systems and measuring, reporting and verifying (MRV); draft text on research and systematic observation; the forum and work programme on response measures; and a list of documents prepared for the SBSTA meeting.

The meeting report reflects that conclusions were prepared for most of the issues addressed in the agenda, including for: a work programme on a common reporting format for the UNFCCC biennial reporting guidelines for developed countries; a work programme on the revision of the guidelines for the review of biennial reports and national communications, including developed countries national inventory reviews; general guidelines for domestic MRV of developing countries’ domestically supported nationally appropriate mitigation actions (NAMAs); and land use, land-use change and forestry (LULUCF) under the Kyoto Protocol Article 3, paragraphs 3 and 4, and under the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM).
