UNFCCC16 August 2011: The UNFCCC Secretariat has published submissions from observer organizations on approaches to address loss and damage associated with climate change impacts in developing countries that are particularly vulnerable to adverse effects of climate change to enhance adaptive capacity.

At its 34th session, the Subsidiary Body for Implementation (SBI) invited parties and and relevant organizations to submit to the Secretariat further views and information on: assessing the risk of loss and damage associated with the adverse effects of climate change and the current knowledge on the same; a range of approaches to address loss and damage associated with the adverse effects of climate change, including impacts related to extreme weather events and slow onset events, taking into consideration experience at all levels; and the role of the Convention in enhancing the implementation of approaches to address loss and damage associated with the adverse effects of climate change. Submissions have been received from: the UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UN/ISDR); the Munich Climate Insurance Initiative; the German Committee for Disaster Reduction; and Friends of the Earth. These submissions will be considered by SBI 35.

The UNFCCC Secretariat has also received submissions from IUCN and UN/ISDR on views on the process to enable least developed country parties (LDCs) to formulate and implement national adaptation plans, and on the modalities and guidelines available for LDCs. Parties and relevant organizations had been invited to submit their views for compilation and as input to the possible expert meeting.
