The UNFCCC published the report of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) to the Conference of the Parties (COP) (FCCC/CP/2012/6), which indicates that, on climate change mitigation, the GEF has supported 569 projects with $3.6 billion in funding to 156 developing countries and economies in transition.
20 September 2012: The UNFCCC Secretariat has published the report of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) to the Conference of the Parties (COP) (FCCC/CP/2012/6), which includes information on the activities of the GEF for the fiscal year 2012, from 1 July 2011 to 30 June 2012, in the area of climate change.
The GEF, as an operating entity of the financial mechanism of the UNFCCC, has provided financing to country-driven projects. The report is presented in response to COP Decision 12/CP.2 that adopted and brought into force a memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the COP and the GEF Council that provides, inter alia, that annual reports of the GEF will be made available to the COP through the Secretariat.
The report features sections on: the GEF’s response to the Convention Guidance; GEF Achievements; and GEF Initiatives during the Reporting Period. It also has seven annexes, including on Projects under the Least Developed Countries Fund (LDCF) and the Special Climate Change Fund (SCCF), and projects presented under the GEF Trust Fund.
The report describes that the GEF provided finance, inter alia: for the preparation and/or the implementation of Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions (NAMAs); for mitigation actions across the land base, including forests and non-forests, under the Land Use, Land Use Change, and Forestry (LULUCF) objective; and on forestlands under the Sustainable Forest Management (SFM)/REDD+ Program.
The report highlights that the GEF, through the LDCF, is preparing initial measures in support of the National Adaptation Plan (NAP) process in LDCs, and is exploring additional support for the implementation of the LDCs work programme. On technology transfer, the GEF has supported projects and programmes in both mitigation and adaptation based on the Poznan Strategic Program on Technology Transfer.
The report indicates that on climate change mitigation, the GEF has supported 569 projects with $3.6 billion in funding to 156 developing countries and economies in transition, attracting co-financing of $23.7 billion. Most of the projects were funded from the GEF Trust Fund. It further describes that for adaptation, the GEF, through the LDCF and the SCCF Adaptation Program (SCCF-A), had mobilized $317.3 million and $162.2 million respectively for 76 and 41 projects as of 30 June 2012.
