10 May 2012: The UNFCCC Secretariat has released Australia’s submission containing its views on certain aspects of the eligibility of carbon dioxide capture and storage (CCS) in geological formations as Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) project activities (FCCC/SBSTA/2012/MISC.8/Add.2).

Australia made this submission in response to a request by the seventh session of the Conference of the Parties serving as the meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol (COP/MOP 7) for submissions on: the eligibility of CCS project activities involving transport of carbon dioxide from one country to another or involving geological storage sites that are located in more than one country; and the establishment of a global reserve of certified emission reductions (CERs) for CCS project activities. Four submissions from Denmark and the European Commission on behalf of the EU, Nauru on behalf of the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS), Pakistan and India, have previously been received by the Secretariat on this issue (FCCC/SBSTA/2012/MISC.8 and FCCC/SBSTA/2012/MISC.8/Add.1).

All the submissions received will be considered by the 36th session of the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA), taking place in Bonn, Germany, from 14-25 May 2012.
