UNFCCC27 August 2014: The UNFCCC Secretariat has launched the multilateral assessment (MA) initiative that will enable developed countries to compare their individual efforts in meeting their greenhouse gas (GHG) emission limitation and reduction targets.

The MA initiative is part of the newly-established international assessment and review (IAR) process for developed country parties. The IAR process, conducted under the Subsidiary Body for Implementation (SBI), aims to foster the comparability of efforts among developed country parties regarding their quantified economy-wide emission limitation and reduction targets.

IAR is a two-step process starting with a technical review of developed countries’ national reports, followed by the MA of the progress made by developed countries towards achieving their economy-wide targets.

The MA process provides a platform for governments to exchange questions over a period of three months on progress towards their respective targets. Following this “questions and answers” period, the first MA round will be conducted for 17 developed countries on 6 and 8 December 2014, during the 20th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 20) to the UNFCCC to be held in Lima, Peru, from 1-12 December 2014.

On 25 August 2014, the UNFCCC Secretariat sent a message to parties announcing the launch of the MA process and a webpage dedicated to the MA process was created on the UNFCCC website. [UNFCCC Press Release] [MA Dedicated Webpage] [UNFCCC Message to Parties]
