UNFCCC, IRENA Hold Technical Expert Meeting on Renewable Energy Supply
story highlights

During the first week of the Bonn Climate Change Conference, a Technical Expert Meeting (TEM) on renewable energy supply, organized by the Secretariat of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in partnership with the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), took place under the Ad Hoc Working Group on the Durban Platform for Enhanced Action (ADP) on 3 June 2015.

UNFCCC - IRENA3 June 2015: During the first week of the Bonn Climate Change Conference, a Technical Expert Meeting (TEM) on renewable energy supply, organized by the Secretariat of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in partnership with the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), took place under the Ad Hoc Working Group on the Durban Platform for Enhanced Action (ADP) on 3 June 2015.

Given the decision of the 20th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 20) to continue the technical examination of opportunities with high mitigation potential, including associated adaptation, health and sustainable development co-benefits in the period 2015-2020, the TEM aimed to assist Parties in advancing the implementation of good practice policy options and technologies related to renewable energy supply.

The TEM consisted of three sessions. The first session addressed policies, practices and actions associated with unlocking potential on the ground now, with experts sharing experiences on capitalizing on renewable energy potential, lessons learned, challenges and plans for further scaling up. The second session dealt with leveraging scalable, replicable and transformative support efforts, with participants identifying real opportunities to bring action to fruition and discussing options to mobilize finance, technology and capacity, and ways of overcoming barriers on financing and policy fronts. The third session considered ways to ensure more and faster renewable energy now through “accelerator partnerships” by turning potential into action on the ground, with panelists sharing information on international partnerships assisting countries and cities to capitalize on their renewable energy potential. The ADP briefed participants on support to increase renewable energy supply by UNFCCC institutions and other international organizations.

Presentations delivered during the TEM addressed numerous issues, including: the deep decarbonization pathway; sustainable production of low-carbon fuels; distributed generation and integration; scalable and replicable public-private partnerships; policies and financial incentives, including feed-in tariffs; and the role of public policy, finance and other incentives in mobilizing renewable energy investments.
