UNFCCC Addresses Enhanced Regional Distribution of the CDM

The UNFCCC Secretariat convened a side event on the margins of COP 18on ‪measures to enhance the regional distribution of the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM).

The event highlighted the importance of capacity building and the provision of resources to expand the regional distribution of CDM projects.

UNFCCC29 November 2012: The Secretariat of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) convened a side event on the margins of the 18th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 18) on ‪measures to enhance the regional distribution of the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM).

The side event featured presentations from the UNFCCC Secretariat, the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) Risø Centre and the Banque ouest africaine de développement (BOAD). Presentations addressed steps taken to enhance the regional distribution of the CDM including the provision of loans for the development of CDM projects, training and help desks and the translation of key CDM documents.

The side event also presented on the CDM Regional Collaboration Centres, which will be operating in five regions by 2013. For additional information on the Collaboration Centres the example of the Togo Centre was presented. The Togo Centre, which was established in October 2012, is intended to support the identification of CDM projects, provide assistance for the design of such projects, address issues identified by validators, and identify opportunities to reduce transaction costs.
