28 June 2011: The UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has released the outcome of the meeting on the future of the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES), held on 10 June 2011, in Paris, France. The meeting’s outcome calls for representation of key stakeholders and recommends elements of a knowledge generation strategy.

The meeting was held at UNESCO headquarters in Paris, France, on 10 June 2011, and was organized by the International Council for Science (ICSU) with support from UNESCO. The conclusions will contribute to further discussions at the IPBES Plenary meeting, which will take place in October 2011.

In reference to institutional arrangements and modalities, participants supported the establishment of an Executive Committee and recommended that the governing structure allow representation of key stakeholders, beyond the science and policy communities. On the generation of knowledge function, participants suggested: establishing an IPBES “scoping process” to identify and prioritize knowledge needs of policy makers; and organizing dialogues on knowledge gaps, to catalyze efforts to generate new knowledge. They also noted that a knowledge generation strategy is needed for the scientific community to address needs for new knowledge in a strategic way.
