UNESCO14 March 2012: The Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) and International Hydrological Programme (IHP) of the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the Multi One Attitude Foundation have announced that the trimaran RACE FOR WATER will participate in races around the world, to raise awareness of the importance of preserving the ocean and freshwater resources.

The partnership among the three organizations was announced during the sixth World Water Forum in Marseille, France. The Multi One Attitude Foundation will install a Water Pavilion in each port of call, to draw the attention of the general public about water preservation, highlighting the role of UNESCO in this area. RACE FOR WATER will also promote innovation with universities by developing tools and systems to measure the water footprint and micro-plastic pollution in the oceans.

According to UNESCO, the RACE FOR WATER vessel could launch Argo floats during its journey around the world as a contribution to the Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS), a programme that studies ocean variability in the long term to improve climate projections. [UNESCO Press Release]
