UNESCO-IOC to Cooperate in Yeosu Project on Oceans and Coasts

UNESCO-IOC will cooperate in the Yeosu Project, which consists of capacity enhancing training through research activity targeted at developing countries in South East Asia, and support action for the development of a roadmap for the establishment of an IOC Sub-Commission for Africa and adjacent island States.

13 December 2011: As part of the Yeosu project, the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO-IOC) signed a cooperation agreement with the organizing committee for the Yeosu Expo 2012 and Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA). The Yeosu Project aims to support developing countries in achieving sustainable development of the oceans and coasts.

KOICA oversees the execution of the project, which consists of: capacity enhancing training through research activity targeted at developing countries in South East Asia, an initiative carried out within the framework of the IOC-Scientific Committee on Oceanic Research (SCOR) International – International Science Programme on the Global Ecology and Oceanography of Harmful Algal Blooms (GEOHAB) in Asia; and support action for the development of a roadmap for the establishment of an IOC Sub-Commission for Africa and adjacent island States.

The Yeosu Expo aims to enhance the international community’s perception of the function and value of oceans and coasts, share knowledge on the proper use of the ocean and coast and recognize the need for cooperation in the marine sector.

The cooperation agreement was signed on 12 December 2011, at UNESCO headquarters in Paris, France. [UNESCO-IOC Press Release]
