UNESCO AfriMAB Book Showcases Biosphere Reserves in Africa

The UN Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Man and Biosphere (MAB) regional network for Africa, AfriMAB, has announced the release of a book that showcases experiences from nine African countries in the management of Biosphere reserves.

The 21 papers included in the publication seek to exchange knowledge, share experiences and guide implementation of the MAB programme in developing countries.

UNESCO26 March 2014: The UN Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Man and Biosphere (MAB) regional network for Africa, AfriMAB, has announced the release of a book that showcases experiences from nine African countries in the management of Biosphere reserves. The 21 papers included in the publication seek to exchange knowledge, share experiences and guide implementation of the MAB programme in developing countries.

The book, titled ‘AfriMAB – Biosphere Reserves in Sub-Saharan Africa: Showcasing Sustainable Development,’ provides a collection of articles highlighting, inter alia: the role of the biosphere concept as a tool for natural resource management in East Africa; conservation efforts in the Bia-Goaso Forest block; sustainable natural resource management in the transboundary biosphere reserve between Benin, Burkina Faso and Niger; sustainable development in the Cape Winelands biosphere reserve; the involvement of local people; stakeholders’ participation; and securing farmers’ livelihoods.

AfriMAB was established in 1996. It covers sub-Saharan Africa, including Madagascar, and comprises Anglophone, Francophone and Lusophone areas of the continent.
