15 April 2009: The Executive Board of the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) is holding its 181th session from 14-30 April 2009, in Paris, France. During the meeting, participants will consider approving the report by the Director-General on a detailed plan of action for the UNESCO Strategy for Action on Climate Change for 2009 and 2010-2011 (181 EX/15).

The Plan aims to develop a multidisciplinary approach to guide UNESCO’s climate change adaptation work at the country level, and to enable the incremental implementation of the refined UNESCO Strategy for Action on Climate Change approved by the UNESCO Executive Board at its 180th session. The Plan seeks to ensure that UNESCO’s actions are supportive of and coherent with the UN system-wide climate change action framework initiated by the UN System Chief Executives Board for Coordination (CEB) and the Bali Road Map. The Plan is structured around the following three main strategic objectives: building and maintaining the climate change knowledge base (science, assessment, monitoring and early warning); promoting mitigation of and adaptation to climate change, including through enhanced education and public awareness; and moving towards a climate-neutral UNESCO.
