unep_wccd30 October 2015: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) has signed a partnership agreement with the World Council on City Data (WCCD) to work with cities to pilot a resource efficiency toolkit, pioneer best practices, and build data on cities. The agreement will operate within the framework of the UNEP-led Global Initiative for Resources Efficient Cities (GI-REC), which promotes energy efficient buildings, environmental fiscal management and sustainable waste management.

Through the agreement, UNEP and WCCD will work with cities to help them achieve the Council’s ISO 37120 certification, the first international standard for city data. Cities can obtain different certification levels, from “aspirational” to “platinum,” based on the number of indicators reported and verified. The city data standard will be used as the core measurement framework.

The organizations will carry out pilot projects in: Johannesburg, South Africa, which has already achieved ISO 37120 certification; Brussels, Belgium; London, UK; Los Angeles, US; Barcelona, Spain; and Shanghai, China.

UNEP and WCCD signed the agreement at the Tenth Global Forum for Human Settlements, which took place from 29-30 October 2015, in New York, US. [WCCD Press Release] [Global Forum Website] [GI-REC Website] [WCCD ISO 37120 Certification]
